Saguaro (pronounced “sah-wah-roh”) National Park is located in southern Arizona – just outside of Tucson. The park is home to the giant saguaro cacti. It is not uncommon for them grow to 40 feet tall. What I was most surprised about on our visit was not only their height, but the number of cacti in the park. It felt like a forest of saguaros.
The park is split into two units: an east and a west unit. When we visited, we spent all our time in the west unit. We only had a few hours in Saguaro National Park, but we felt like we covered a lot of ground. While we were there, we did a few short hikes and a scenic drive. We were camping at the Mesa/Apache Junction KOA just outside of Phoenix. It was about an hour and a half drive to Saguaro.
Wish List
If we return to Saguaro, I’d like to take time to do more hiking. There are quite a few trails in the park, and we only had time to venture down a few short trails. I’d also like to explore the eastern unit. To learn more about the park, visit the Saguaro National Park website here: Saguaro National Park (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov).
