Cottonwood Campground is located in the south unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. If it looks like we’re camping on the edge of a parking lot, it’s because we are. Cottonwood Campground was great, but we did have an issue fitting into our spot. Based on the listed dimensions, we should have fit, but our particular site was a “parallel” spot on a gravel patch along the side of the campground road. Although the gravel patch was technically long enough, it was the front and back came to narrow points that wouldn’t allow us to fit our entire camper and truck in the spot- even if unhooked. We talked to the campground host, found out that there was one spot available that would work for us, and this was it.
It turns out that it really wasn’t a bad spot. We had lots of space. Our door opened right out to a field with trees and picnic tables. We were also only here one night, so we were just happy to have a place to stay. As you can see from the photo, there was someone across the parking lot from us. There was also someone immediately behind us.
All-in-all, it wasn’t a bad place to stay once we got everything figured out. It was only about a 10 minute drive to the town of Medora and it was just a few miles down the road from the scenic drive within the park. If you’re planning on staying here with a camper/trailer, be very careful about what spot you book. Even if the length seems to be appropriate, you may still have issues. Take a careful look at the photos. There were several pull-through sites that could definitely accommodate larger RV’s.
