Foggy sunrise view from the campground

Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park Campground

The Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park campground is one of our favorites! We like the multiple-loop design with the campground trail meandering through each one. The campsites are generally tucked into the trees, creating a sense of privacy and a more rustic feel. Most sites located on the outside of the loops back up to trees. Even sites on the inside of the loops have a few trees surrounding them.

In addition to RV sites, there are walk-in tent camping sites. These sites have designated parking areas and wagons to help you get your camping gear to the site. There are also cabins tucked away off one of the loops. We’ve never stayed in a walk-in site or a cabin, but they are popular at the campground.

The campground has a general store if you need to pick something up. The general store also has WiFi available. There is a state park trailhead located near the campground for easy access. One of our favorite aspects of this campground is the campground trail system. It is a flat trail that meanders through each loop of the campground. The campground trail connects to the Black River Trail system just outside the campground. This is a wide open, mostly paved trail that continues from the campground to the main day-use area of the park.

Don’t just take our word for it. This campground was USA Today’s “Best State Park for Camping” in 2022. Click here to read the article.
