Camping at Twelvemile Beach has been one of our favorite camping experiences! The sites were well-spaced with plenty of trees. You could hear the waves of Lake Superior even from the campsites on the inland side of the campground. It is a rustic campground with vault toilets, no showers, and no electric hookups. While we were there in August, the weather was great for dry camping. It was warm during the day but cooled off nicely in the evenings. To access Twelvemile Beach, you must drive about a mile down a fairly narrow gravel road. We took it slow, and we were fine even with our 16 ft travel trailer. Once we reached the campground, we saw that there were other much larger campers that had successfully made the journey.
This campground is located in bear country, so there were bear boxes for food storage and strict rules about leaving food out unattended. Of course, there’s also the beach. Steps lead from the campground down to the beach. For me, the water was too cold for swimming, but there were some people who didn’t seem to mind the cold water.
